Billerica Man Says Dog Saved Him From House Fire

BILLERICA (CBS) -- A man in Billerica has his dog to thank for saving him from a house fire Saturday morning.

Jason Stearns says he was sleeping when his dog Buckley jumped up on him and wouldn't stop barking. It wasn't until he opened his eyes that he realized he Buckley, and Stearns' two cats were in danger.

He saw fire directly above him and an ember had just fallen on him.

He jumped out of bed and making sure Buckley was right along with him he got out of the house.

"He wouldn't stop barking. I was pretty tired. I couldn't sleep good. I had a smoke alarm, but obviously the smoke alarm wasn't loud enough. But Buckley sure was," said Stearns.

Stearns says his only injury was a small burn on his finger, but he knows it could have been much worse.

Stearns says he saw one of his cat run into the woods, and although he hasn't seen the other he is hopeful it is okay.

Stearns plans to rebuild his home.

Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours. No word on what caused the fire.
