Somerville Schools Find And Throw Out Expired Food

SOMERVILLE (CBS) - As Boston City Councilor John Connoly held another public hearing Thursday night over expired food in Boston's public schools, another school system was making some tough decisions about its own food services program.

USDA guidelines say frozen food is safe to eat, even after the expiration date.

Somerville school officials don't want to take any chances.

They say a check of their food inventory uncovered about $36 worth of pass-date items, which were thrown out.

The school says unless state and federal officials tell them otherwise, they will continue to follow the rule on expiration dates.
