Penguins Matt Cooke Suspended 14+ Games Over Blindside Hit

Pittsburgh (CBS) - The NHL came down hard on Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke over a blindside elbow to the head of the New York Rangers' Ryan McDonagh.

Cooke, who is a repeat offender, was suspended for the remainder of the regular season, which works out to 10 games, along with the first round of the playoffs.

Cooke's blindside hit that ended Boston Bruins star Marc Savard's season last year, led to the NHL cracking down on those types of hits.

He was not punished for that hit but has already been suspended once in 2011.

According to CBS Pittsburgh, Cooke will also forfeit close to $220,000 in salary as part of his punishment.
