91-Year-Old Driver Injured In Avon Crash With Commuter Rail Train

AVON (CBS) - A 91-year-old driver was injured Thursday in a crash involving a Commuter Rail train on the Middleboro/Lakeville line.

Police say the car had pulled onto the tracks at the railroad crossing on East High Street in Avon (Map It) as a commuter train was bearing down. The driver has been identified as Ann Kireilis, of Brockton.

The conductor told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens that the gates were down at the crossing and the lights were flashing.

It's unclear how badly the driver was injured.  Emergency crews at the scene say she was taken to the hospital, but was conscious and alert. No one onboard the train was hurt.

The MBTA said riders could expect residual delays on the Middleboro/Lakeville line.

As of 2 p.m. on Thursday those delays were averaging about 25-30 minutes. The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
