BOSTON (CBS) – Uncertainty in Japan has sent the stock market on a roller coaster ride. That has many investors pulling out of the market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down more than 1% Tuesday afternoon.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Bernice Corpuz asked Bentley University Finance Professor Atul Gupta to identify the driving force behind the turmoil on Wall Street.  He says, it’s fear.

“The more uncertainty there is about what the future holds, the riskier it is to put your money in the market,” said Gupta.

Gupta believes putting your money under your mattress is no safe bet either, pointing out the risk of robbery, a house fire, or some other catastrophe.

He recommends treasuries as a low-risk alternative.
