Police Bust Unlicensed Electricians On Craigslist

BOSTON (CBS) – Electricians have been busted on Craigslist.

State investigators posing as homeowners set up a sting online and caught 20 electricians working without a license.

The contractors refused to give their last names and demanded cash for payment.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030‘s Lana Jones reports.

“We called about 20 of these folks, and they all came tracing down to our undercover sting homes, and proceeded to attempt to install the various pieces of electrical hardware that we purchased, and of course that’s when we informed them they were violating state law,” said Barbara Anthony, the Undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs.

If you’re looking for help around the house, officials say you should make sure electricians have a valid state license. To find out more information, visit the state’s Division of Professional Licensure website.

who the hell can afford a licensed electrician?

  • Cynic

The State doesn’t lincense anyone for the protection of anyone . The State licenses only for the purpose of having a means to punish someone.

I have had an unlicensed “fake electrician” install the wrong wire in my home. It may have eventually burned down my home, or worse burn my home AND kill my family. My state has been working on investigating this “fake electrician” for 4 months now…he is is BIG TROUBLE.

how would you feel if anybody in your family was hurt or killed becouse somone wanted to save a buck by not hiring a licensed person. think about it!! is it really worth it???

The attitude expressed in the first 2 comments are why these “fellows” got away with it so long, requiring a sting operation to be set up. Licensure is set up to prove you know a skill, such as driving, electrical, etc. If you are not using a licensed electrician and they are not pulling a permit then you are taking a big chance, with your property and more importantly with Life Safety. Let’s think……”what’s the wort that can happen?” – very bad attitude when it comes to any living thing. And yes, I am a licensed electrician

Hi. I’m an electrician. I’m also at least partially responsible for this. I talked to the head of the board of examiners about this specifically. You’re welcome. For the first idiot. Do you have any idea how much it costs for me to be in business? Believe me, @ $85 hr I’m barely getting by. Stop complaining. Electrical supplies are expensive as h#ll and gas ain’t cheap either. Insurance is no bargain. When you do the math, I actually make about $20-$30 hr. of that…and that’s when I go hourly. I usually don’t. I usually have a price per job. When I have to compete with these guys, I get killed every time. For the second idiot…i won’t even dignify your attitude. Your probably a handyman or an unlicensed hacker. FO.

Check out anyones license who works on your property. Even if they do not need a license, make sure they are bonded and insured for their profession. I was scammed and learned the hard way. My “fake elecrician” lied and advertised as licensed. I trusted that he was. Good thing another contractor saw the bad wire! Hire Licensed Electricians for sure. I am pretty sure that the fake knew the wire was wrong because the price difference was huge…
