Temperature Shock

Melissa Mack, WBZ-TV meteorologist

Continental Polar air has taken the plunge into our backyards.  Yes, it’s a shock to your system as you walk outside this morning.

Then, we can factor in the gusty NW winds in order to have wind chill readings 0F to -5F.

Despite the all encompassing sunshine, highs will hover in between 20F and 27F.  That’s 15-20F degrees below the average for March 3.

Temperatures reach the 30s by Friday with increasing clouds as a warm front nears.

Watch Melissa’s forecast:

Friday night through Sunday:  The majority of the ‘lift’ from the warm front will remain to our north and west Friday night, but it’s possible a few rain/snow showers slip into our northern and western viewing area during that time period.  Then, we will be in the warm sector for the weekend.  The majority of the energy from a cold/stationary front will remain to our west through Saturday. An upper level ridge will be slowing down the cold front which becomes nearly stationary until the ridge breaks down.  Debris cloud cover from the stationary front will create partly sunny skies Saturday.  The best chance of rain begins Sunday afternoon and continues through Monday afternoon.  During that time period, the heaviest precipitation will fall from Sunday night into Monday morning.  At the moment, it appears the precipitation will fall in the form of rain. However, there’s a chance that there will be a rain/snow mix for the tail-end of the system.  In my opinion, the best part of the weekend is the warm air advection that will be taking place.

So after looking over the computer models I think we can at last finally put winter to bed!! Bring on spring!! 90% certain that there will be no more major snowstorms or arctic outbreaks this season!!!!

  • retrac

    I agree B.M.

The storm track mean shifted to our west about a month ago and is going to stay there.

  • JimmyJames

Its been a great winter and I can’t complain with the snowfall we had.
I hope there are some good thunderstorm days this summer and according to The Farmers’ Almanac which I am skeptical of they are calling for some thunderstorms during April.

  • Michael

    Good morning,
Like I said yesterday my passion is weather in all it’s raw forms!! To be honest I have had enough of winter and look forward to the warmer days ahead!

I think we might still get some wet snow events this month but no nor easters. I do think we still need to watch closely for any heavy rain events. The weekend storm threat looks to me in be mostly rain and I think another 1-2 inches. I do think it could end as some sleet or snow but not a big deal.

  • Charlie

What a weird winter for Wrentham!! 70 inches fell by Feb , in the last month we have only gotten about 4 inches since and it appears no snow in march for a 2nd consecutive year, i think so, springs here and so isn’t the stronger sun, my lucky prediction back a month ago that winter is over snow wise is gonna b right as the days r almost even at 12 hrs of daylight,

  • JOHN

Goodmorning Charlie- I hope your prediction with no more snow holds true. But I am curious about this prediction, is this a gut feeling or you see something on the longrange maps. I do not know how to read the maps. I would love your feedback on this. Thank’s Charlie.

  • rainshine

BaileyMan – Really? I hope you are right – I am so tired of this cold weather! ‘Though there won’t be any northeasters, isn’t there a chance we could still get some plowable snow before the end of March – maybe into April? By the way, I do enjoy your blogs.

JimmyJames – I too am looking forward to thunderstorm season (not for anything that would cause damage or anything – just following the storms and watching the sky.

  • JOHN

Hey rainshine- was that the real BM. Did not seem like one of his reg blogs,
but maybe he was in a hurry.

  • Hadi

Retrac you really think we are done with snow? I think arctic outbreaks probably, but I still think we have a decent size storm in the books.

  • JOHN

Yea Hadi- it did not seem like one of his reg blogs, I do not think that was him.

  • rainshine

I read BaileyMan’s blogs and it didn’t seem quite right to me either – that’s why I questioned it. If it really is you, BM, sorry for the doubt!:)

  • funnystuff

How pathetic…the fake BM (assuming that was fake) says snow is over and you all govel to his words and agree…now Hadi calls him out and now you all agree snow is coming? Classic case of group think…no one thinks for themselves, except Hadi who lives on this blog but doesn’t shy away from a call.

  • retrac

Sorry Hadi, snow is over. wish we had one more in us but I just don’t see it.

Maybe another elevation type storm sometime but a widespread snowstorm does not look to be in the cards.

Storm track is too locked in to the west of us and by the time it changes again, things will be greening up, sun angle, warmer water etc…

  • JOHN

Your blog does not make any sense.

  • Ubet

Oh yeah! I hope there are dozens of extreme thunderstorms! With lots of lightning! I love it when lightning strikes, trees fall down on houses, power lnes are taken down, flash floods occur….good times!

  • Hadi

Retrac I guess we shall see. I think the later half of the month will have some surprises.

  • shotime

I can’t help but think that we are in for one last hurrah to end this winter. Sure I’d love spring to be here tomorrow, but I just don’t feel Mother Nature’s done with us quite yet as I’m putting on the layers so I don’t freeze my little tootsies off out there today!

  • Joshua

I’m surprised that virtually all the bloggers have thrown in the towel on this winter. I assume you’re all New Englanders. March is as variable as any month on our calendar. Sure, currently the long-range models don’t look conducive to snowfall or even the kind of cold we’re experiencing now. But that’s today’s prediction, which can only account for a limited number of factors. With plenty of cold air to our north in Eastern Canada and also far Northern NE , in fact, right through most of March, all it takes is a dip in the jetstream to produce storminess and possibly snow. Right now, the jetstream looks like it’s flattening out. But, tomorrow or next week that could look completely different. I’m generally a day to day person with weather. We only really know (roughly) what’s going to happen 1-4 days out. After that it becomes wildly unpredictable in a climate like ours.

I only write off winter when seabreezes kick in and Boston becomes cooler than the interior to our west and north. So, when a place like Concord NH or Burlington VT is consistently warmer than Boston, you know that spring has arrived. The cold air is just not there. But of course this is what stinks about spring in Boston, in my opinion, we rarely get nice spring-like days in the 60s and 70s. You often freeze your tail off at Fenway Park in April (40s are very common around here in early and mid April) in dreary conditions, which I expect will be worse this year as the ocean water will take a long time to warm up from its lows. Then, all of a sudden, in late May or June it’s 90 and humid. There’s very little in-between. Different story, of course, in the fall, and I do love autumn days.

In any case, today is a wonderful day. I will miss these kinds of days when it’s 90 and humid. One thing for sure is that days like these are dwindling. In fact, even I don’t think we’ll see a day like today again until next December.

  • Scott

12z GFS is still showing a pretty significant change over to snow early next week.

  • BaileyMan

Sorry folks. Major snow in SNE appears to be over! Let’s welcome aboard spring!

  • Judging by your last Sentence……

So in summary, you think winter is over? HILARIOUS!!!!

  • bob

12z gfs not showing any snow!

  • weather_nut

Will the real BaileyMan please stand up!!!

  • RON

You must not have much of a life, and must not feel good about yourself, why else would you pretend to be sombody else. I feel bad for you. You are not Bailman and your not fooling anybody but yourself. Good luck

  • JOHN

There is no way that was him- he has a certain way that he blogs, and also his posts are much longer and more informative.

  • ron

    TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL-TROLL

  • JMA

The GFS MOS low temps for tonight are amazing for March 3rd/4th. Cold, clear night, winds diminishing to calm, snowpack still on the ground. It just might verify. Checkout the temps at CEF, FIT, BED. All between -9 to -13.

  • James

Dang short on blogs today. Winter must be wrapping up. And I agree despite the annoying pretenders trying to stir things up. After reading the blogs that was not the real baileyman i am positive. He has not been on in awhile and it does not fit his style at all!!! So chill out. Topkatt and BM are amongst the best around anywhere at forecasting i agree but again that was not baileyman!!! Topkatt knows him i think So when he comes on later ask topkatt if that was the real baileyman he knows things like that so ill wait.

1 thing else back a few days or so ago i think bm said he thought we get at least 1 more big snowstorm anyway. So must be different fake blogger. BM is you are out there come back and blog and clear things up and is the winter over?? Got to run all be back for more sometime soon

  • Terrance

Are you all actually sayin that can’t be the real Bailesman just cause he is sayin no snow instead of what you all want to hear which is snow. What like he can’t change his mind even? Whats wrong wit you he said no snow now deal with it. Maybe he ends up wrong or maybe not but he said it. Deal with it! Thats the real bailesyman so move on. Maybe winter is over since he said so to. I would be glad for spring to start!

  • Topkatt88

Of course it wasn’t him. A fake always give himself away by the end of the 2nd sentence.

Well, a bright & cold day, in an airmass that would have kept us in the lower teens had this been early January. But I can feel that higher sun angle and the warming effect right through 4 of the 5 windows in this room. You know it’s March just by looking at where the sun is at what time.

That said, I’m not on the winter’s over bandwagon yet. RARE to have 2 years in a row like that. I don’t think this is one of them, and I think the majority of the Boston area will shovel at least one more time before we can put them away.

More later… Have a great afternoon everyone. Even you, resident troll. ;-)

  • Topkatt88

I don’t know BM personally. The only 6 ppl from here I have met in person are southshoretom, and the WBZ weather team including Terry. I know alot of people that read it but don’t blog. :-)

  • Joshua

No, that’s not what I meant. What I meant was really cold days and nights like we’re having during this brief arctic outbreak may not happen again this winter. That does not mean we can’t have snow or daytime temperatures in the 30s and night-time temperatures in the 20s. Teens and single-digits in Boston, however, will be harder to achieve after tonight.

  • Chris McD

Agreed TK. I can remember getting into my FREEZING car in December or January on very cold days even with the sun bouncing off the car. Different story now, very cold day but the stronger sun heats the air up inside my car nicely.

  • Topkatt88

We’ve already had thunderstorms all 3 meteorological winter months, so why not April?

For the record, I don’t put much stock in T.O.F.A. forecasts, but the publication is fantastic for all the other info it contains…

  • Jack

I’ll offer my house. Can always rebuild.

  • Jeff

Fingers crossed that we get 3+ inches of rain. i made a sweet videotape of the Neponsit overflowing its banks last year into the airport and an adjacent neighborhood. i think with a foot or so of the white stuff on the ground a couple of 3-5 inch rainstorms would be suh—-weeeeeeet!!!!!

  • Jeff

Topkatt, what do you man when you say warmer inconvescense is nuetral in the prolification of an onset of lower level snowfalls with high liquid ratios? i dont get it

  • Joshua

For anyone who wants to prolong the winter experience, I suggest Quebec City. Great town, very French without the attitude. March features bright but cold days (like today in Boston) and periodic heavy snowfalls. The current forecasts point in that direction, too. They’ve actually had a very snowless winter thus far (much less than Boston, which is unusual), but will make up for it this month. Two days ago they had over 15 inches of snow. And this weekend they’re expecting another foot or so.

  • Jeff

WOOOHOO GFS shows about 40 hour of intense rainfall in SE Mass/RI.. can you say major flooding??????? Looks like a beast, but I dont think theres much snow down there right now :(

  • Topkatt88

Yup! In the car at midday today and didn’t even need the heat on.

  • Topkatt88

Yeah but they don’t have the Quebec Nordiques hockey team! It’s never been the same since they left!

  • tjammer

Went out at lunch, really chilly wallking to the car, but once I got in I just sat there for a few minutes and enjoyed the heat!

  • tjammer

But I hear that Quebic is going to get a team!

  • Joshua

I hear they’re trying to lure a team back, hopefully a better one than the Nordiques. Patrice Bergeron hails from Quebec City. I believe Guy LaFleur was from QC as well. Hockey is really big up there, really big. It’s all they talk about on the sports shows, TV and radio. But, it seems the QC people couldn’t get attached to their own team, and remained attached to the Canadiens.

  • Samson

that was a fake Top kat88 too!!!! another trolling thingy

  • weather_nut

Pete B. over on channel 7 is nuts. He is still calling for 55 – 60 on Monday with rain. I can tell you now that Monday will be about 30 35 in SW NH with a mix to snow then ending in the PM and Boston will be only 37 – 42 with rain possibly ending as a mix. He as usual is so far off it isn’t even funny. Hopefully someday channel 7 will get a clue and understand that the people in New England take their weather serious and demand solid Mets.

  • retrac

    W.N.

    I agree with you.

I will say that forecasting temps on the higher end is a risky business in New England any time of year forget March!

  • The Graupler

Yeah Bouchard’s forecast seems a little off. Checking the models his temps seem high and unless it’s just a bad screengrab he has Thursday looking like another soaker. I see late day rain into Friday AM… hmmm

  • Chris McD

The temperatures could get close to Pete’s readings on Monday before a cold front moves through. It all depends on when the front moves through and every met has their own prediction time wise.

  • retrac

Probably an intern in the weather office posting the wrong graphics. Maybe they’ll be correct on a technicality with a high of 55 at like 4 in the morning before temps crash

  • BailyMan

Well I see I have caused quite a bit of a stir on the blog today. Those who know me for sure, know that was an imposture. Well I sure hope you enjoyed yourself. Now that I have cleared things up lets move forward. As I posted a few days ago I do not think the back of winter is broken yet, however we are running out of time. As I blogged earlier this week I am looking at a possible snow event around the third week of March. As far as todays cold goes I am almost certain that will be the last of that. Not saying we won’t have some frosty starts, I just do not think we will see a return of todays cold start and day. Now we can look forward to a decent warmup this coming weekend. I do believe many towns may hit 60s by Sunday. As we look forward to the next weathermaker, I would say a mostly rain storm around these parts. We may see a brief mix early Monday, however I do think we should make it into the low 50s. Following the storms exit I see a warm and windy Tuesday. For the next 7-10 days we should see a moderation in tempature. I hope this clears things up. On my way out for a bite to eat. Lol have a nice evening.

  • weather_nut

No, it’s not a mistake by some graphics guy. I have been watching his TV forecast and he has said that it will be warm all day. Look at his low temp for Mon, it is 48. I would be willing to bet all my assets that at some point on Monday in Boston the temp will be lower than48. The front will be east of Boston around if not before midnight on Sunday. I am telling you, this guy needs to get into another profession and take his staff with him!!!

  • weather_nut

If you are the real BailyMan, I will have to disagree with you on the Sunday – Tuesday part of your prediction. You sould more like that disater over on channel 7. I will stick with Harvey on this one and go with lo 50 – 55 on Sunday (Possibly lower if the clouds take over). I will go with 30′s SNH with a mix on late Sunday night and Monday Morning and rain possibly ending as a mix in Boston on Monday with temps from 37 – 44. I will go with a windy and chilly day on Tuesday with temps in the upper 30′s to lower 40′s and then we will warm up a bit during the week with some rain on Thursday followed by a colder end to the week. We shall see who is correct! This is what makes it fun.

  • aqua

Well said Baileyman! It will b nice to warm up a bit.

  • aqua

Go Bruins!!! I am a huge hockey fan and I can’t wait to see the B’s win the the Stanley cup.

  • JOHN

look for a good game tonight back home in there barn. The crowd will be jacked after that great road trip, and the new guys on there first home game. Also Tim Thomas is back between the pipes. As far as the cup goes lets not go there yet. We need to stay healthy and keep moving in that direction.

  • Scott

this transition from winter to spring isn’t great at all…does anyone actually enjoy this time of the year?(besides the nice days)

  • southshoretom

I hear what you are saying Scott. It tests my patience. I’m ready for some long term spring weather and of course, I know its a ways off yet.

  • Topkatt88

It isn’t. The real BaileyMan can at least spell “Bailey”. And the writing is a bad attempt at sounding like the real one. Nice try. :-)

  • Topkatt88

I love all times of year, but Oct-Dec is my favorite.

  • John

i guess the one good thing about March is that the winter is almost over. If we get cold days, we know that the warm days are not that far off. And its nice to see some things coming into bloom. By the time we hit this time of year people realy have had enough of winter and have spring and summer in there thoughts. Also to easter. It is later this year, but last year if I am remembering right I was in shorts.

  • Rsquared44

Another fake post. You are clearly not BM, but rather LAME actually

  • aqua

I know talk of the Stanley cup this year is to early, but having two great goalies, one them will be in the zone come playoffs. Nothing better than a hot goalie in the playoffs.Bruins have the best chance in the east.

  • Scott

especially with those coastal sea breezes that go right through May.

  • BAILEYMAN

It is me tk. thankyou for the support.lol will try to post again later. Sorry about the spelling. Late night teaching and early start. tk and Jma keep them posted.

  • southshoretom

One thing in March and September I really like is……. after a stretch of cloudy weather, when a sunny day finally comes and you get to watch a sunrise or sunset and see how much the sun has moved on the horizon in a few days.

  • JOHN

Hey Aqua- but they need to put thomas in this year. I have said it over and over since last year, they should have pulled tr out of net and put thomas in. TK is a big hockey guy. I am sure he would love to chime in.

  • JOHN

Speaking of sports there will be a 24hr extension on tonights deadline. Come Saturday we should know if we have football or not. My gut tells me they will find a way to keep this on come fall.

  • Topkatt88

Watch for the back-at-home-letdown tonight. They can avoid it if they are smart. I think both TT & TR are about equal right now. I trust both of them in a late season to playoff run but I’d start TT in the playoffs.

Just saw the 18z GFS. What a mess of a run. This model is having issues again. Too progressive early, too slow late. Euro is the model of choice again today for the medium range.

  • Scott

18z GFS never develops the secondary low

  • Hadi

The 12Z EURO really pumps in the QPF VS. GFS which is more progressive.

  • John

Hey TK- no disrespect but I do not think those two are even. Yes TR had a couple good games on the road and is hot right now if you will. And I do agree he was robbed some games this year with the team not playing good for him. But Thomas is having a superb season. I predicted that going into this season, that’s for real. I know you are a big hockey guy and you know this stat.
Whenever Thomas had a bad season or injury prone season, he has always come back with seasons like this. He is right now the best in the entire NHL. Believe it or not I would like to see him get the 7th player award, but BM may just get the nod for that. Feedback.

  • Topkatt88

You make good points about Thomas & Tuukka. We do agree that we’d give Thomas the nod in a must-win situation, I’m sure.

7th Player Award: I could name 5 guys who deserve it, but I suspect you could be right about BM.
