Red Sox Beckett Passes Concussion Test

FORT MYERS, Fla (CBS) - Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett passed his concussion test Wednesday morning, but will still miss his scheduled start on Thursday.

"He passed his test, which means he's allowed to do some activity," manager Terry Francona told reporters Wednesday morning. "They have to monitor his activity, but he'll do some biking and some light throwing. He's not going to pitch (Thursday), we'll just keep him on his schedule to pitch his next time out. How he gets to that start is up to how he feels, and how he and (pitching coach) Curt (Young) decide to do it."

Stolmy Pimentel will start in Beckett's spot on Thursday against the Phillies. If all goes well Beckett's next outing will come early next week.

Beckett suffered a minor concussion on Monday after he was struck in the head with a baseball. He was shagging fly balls in the outfield when coach Ino Guerrero tried to hit a ball back into the infield, instead hitting the righty in the side of the head. Beckett walked off the field but suffered headaches and dizziness the rest of the afternoon.

Last spring, Beckett missed time due to an illness and was never able to get back on track before the start of the season. The Red Sox do not think the same will happen because of the concussion.

"He's only missed one day of throwing, that's not too significant," Francona said.

Beckett was doing well enough, his manager took a stab at his former 20-game winner.

"It's hard for him because he's illiterate," Tito said about Beckett taking the concussion test.
