Wilmington Basketball Team Manager Plays In First Game

WILMINGTON (CBS) - Since his freshman year, Mitchell has been the team manager for the high school boy's basketball team.

"It's like a dream come true, and I'll never forget it," says Kevin Mitchell of Wilmington High.

But he's always dreamed of getting in at least one game. Last Friday night it happened.

"It wasn't a sure thing," said Coach Joe Maiello, "but after I told him it was senior night, and to dress for the game, I was looking for the opportunity."

WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.

That moment came late in the game, and when Mitchell got in, he took two shots, and both missed. Then, he was fouled, and went to the line...with everyone in the stands chanting his name.

"I was so nervous, I could hardly watch," said team captain Chris Frissore.

"We've all known Kevin since rec games, so we all wanted him to get a chance," said Nick Godzyk.

Mitchell missed his first free throw, and the packed gym goaned in unison.

But then he made the second shot, and the crowd erupted.

"It's something I'll always remember...the ball going through the net. And my teammates...and the crowd", said the senior, who held a clipboard for four years, but finally got his chance and made the most of it.
