Alleges School Closings Discriminate Against Minorities

BOSTON (AP) — A coalition of lawyers and educators has filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Boston public schools over a school closure plan it says discriminates against black and Latino students.

The Boston Bar Association’s lawyers’ committee for civil rights under law and the Black Educators’ Alliance of Massachusetts announced Monday that they have filed their complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights.

The complaint alleges that the district’s new “redesign and reinvest plan,” which proposes to close several schools in the district, disproportionately affects black and Latino students since those schools are in largely minority neighborhoods.

But Boston Superintendent Carol Johnson said the schools slated for closure were selected because they are among the lowest chosen by families and have been struggling academically.

Hey, don’t argue with the teachers and their lawyers! They believe keeping underperforming schools open actually HELPS minority students. Gotta love THAT logic. If that’s the kind of logic the teachers in those schools use, no wonder the kids aren’t performing well academically.

Suit will be tossed. No court is going to end a school boards discretion to close poorly performing schools. 20% of the public schools in the US probably need closure for a long history of poor performance. The population of school age kids has declined in recent years. Better to expand the better-performing schools, not throw more money at the clunkers.

Don’t count on the suit being tossed,Remember the “De Facto Segregation” case? Unless I’m getting my cases mixed up that is the one where Judge Garrity took control of the Schools and instituted Busing. The present administration in Cty Hall is not known as being overly sensitive to Minoritys. I some areas The Mayor is known as being to the right of Louise Day Hicks.

Why would teachers be fighting to keep schools open that no parent wants to send their kids to because they’re so bad? Maybe those teachers should be looking in the mirror and asking themselves why their performance is so bad.
