BOSTON (CBS) – If you’re looking for work, the Massachusetts State Police might have a uniform for you.

According to the Boston Globe, the state police force is suffering a severe staff shortage.

The agency has lost about 400 troopers over the last five years, and 200 more are set to retire this year.

As a result, Gov. Deval Patrick is considering funding a new class of cadets, which would add 150 new troopers.

Why to give out more tickets suck it up and keep the cuts

  • Flyer

Seems like a lot hanging around the airport take them from there

  • Warren

Just what the Commonwealth needs, more of them.

Why am I not surprised that this Governor would not consider redistributing the existing resources, and increasing their efficiency (a lesson from the privates sector), instead of hiring more waste. Think the Governor has ever heard of the “Lean model?”

Governor, why don’t you start by looking at the efficiency of the Harbor Division at Logan Airport/Troop F. They’ll have you think that they have to be in the very costly “ready position” 24 hours a day, when in fact, there is so much “excess waste” in their day that their “Day Spa” experience could easily be busted, and their efficiency increased dramatically.

Let’s hope the Wisconsin phenomena makes its way to Massachusetts quickly, and the first stop is the Logan Airport/Troop F Gravy Train.

Ok all of a sudden we need more WAIT HOW , THERE HAS BEEN MAJOR CUTS,, GREAT THERE GOES MY TAXES,, AGAIN.. Why cant the governor make up his darn mind..He just made so many cuts now we know why ,, this HEY GOV YOUR A JERK WHY NOT TAKE A HUGE CUT YOURSELF AND PAY FOR THIS YOURSELF….JERK

  • flyer is a moron

you wont be saying that when you fly out of logan and your plane blows up or your child is kidnapped

  • know your role

Warren All international airports in the US have a police force….using the state police saves your ass a lot of tax money then having a private police force AKA Airport police to run the airport security

  • Mike P.

Are you people for real??? Like crime is not on the uptick due to the economy and the first thing you want to see cut and unfunded is Law Enforcement?

I think next we should cut Fire Services. Let the houses burn. Let people in accidents cut themselves out of wrecked cars.

Then we need to cut schools and teachers. Let’s face it, the way MOST parenting is done, the kids don’t want an education anyways. Most kids are disrespecting, foul mouthed, ignorant little want everything lazy miscreants dead set on finding the easiest way through life.

    Good grief!

  • Waren

Actually, funding for the fire service should have been cut by 40% a long time ago. If you’ve not been paying attention, grab a hold of credible, objective numbers that reflect the number of fires that fire departments responded to 15 or more years ago. Today’s numbers are a fraction of them; a credit to effective Life Safety regulations, provisions and Building Codes (it is not clear what, if any, effectiveness Fire Prevention Bureaus have had). If you want a good laugh, look at the number of Medical Calls that the fire departments have used to back-fill their lost fire calls. Then account for the expenses and value of having those big red trucks running around town for sprained ankles…….and while you’re at it, look for the first City Government or Board of Selectman who have hired non-biased outside experts to measure the quality of medical care provided by their illustrious fire department. If the public had any level of knowledge or understanding of this issue, they’d be outraged. Never mind the fact that municipal and state governments could save huge money and improve service by regionalizing the fire departments of many cities and towns.

Now, back to the airport, any one who believes that there is any cost savings at Logan Airport on law enforcement needs to go back and repeat their Third Grade math class and have their head examined. Perhaps the Chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on Public Safety will have the balls to look at the irresponsible staffing configuration, inefficient deployment of resources, ridiculous (bloated) management structure, and (irresponsible) independence of the Massachusetts State Police at Logan Airport, not to mention the soon to be growing number of Civil Rights complaints against them. Finally, someone has decided to spend some money tracking alleged cases of Civil Rights violations by the illustrious Troop F. Lets hope the Globe breaks that story, and not the Herald.

  • Cynic

Yeah Flyer there sure are a lot of them there….. If they tried to take them out of the Airport and send them where they are really needed they would have a lot of trouble with the Union. F-Troop used to be the dumping grounds for all the misfits but it has become such a cash cow now that they fight to get there.

  • Cynic

Of course they need more Troopers… Who will cover all the Detaila?

  • Warren is slow

Warren, those big red firetrucks move around town for sprained ankles because if they are at a call for a sprained ankle and then get another call 5 minutes later for a fire they are already fully prepare….I want to see your house burn down and see what your reaction to the fire dept is then

  • Cynic

know your role….interesting comment… would you be so kind as to explain to my how replacing $30-$40 K Air Port Police with $150- $200 K Troopers would save money? I’m having a little trouble with the Math.

  • Amazed

I get a kick out of the people who think that not hiring is saving the state money. What do these people think happens when there aren’t enough troopers coming in for a shift? They hire overtime, which is actually costing the state more than hiring more personnel.

  • Cynic

Warren Is Slow… The real reason that you see those Fire trucks on Medical calls is because a Man DIED of a Heart Attack in front of a FIRE STATION in Charlestown because no one from the City told the Fire Dept.
Also it is very rare that the Ambulance gets there before the Fire Dept. Usually the Firemen bring the situation under control then WAIT for the Ambulance to show up.This is the REAL world.

  • Cynic

Amazed…You are Right on the money… The State should do something about the Abuse of overtime.

  • Eric Miller

Waren, Fire Departments do a lot more than fight fires. The respond to Medicals, CO Alarms, Vehicle accidents, when your oil tank leaks they respond as a HAZMAT team. Cut the fire departments and when you fall and slice your head open you might be waiting for the nearest private ambulance company such as Cataldo, Fallon or one of them to respond, where normally the Fire Dept. would be at your house helping.

  • BigDog

I agree with you about the OT abuse.

  • lordandmaster

This country has been sick, this country needs healing, this country needs medicine – in fact I’d go so far as to say that, what this country really needs, right now, is a Doctor.
Have you checked the national employment data trends lately?Basic economics of supply and demand, when jobs are few and the unemployment rate is high people will tend to take a job and encompass it’s up’s and down’s due to the need to sustain the persons own family.Their are so many people that have applied for public service(police, fire personnel, etc)but are denied for some reasons(some legitimate) or just overlooked.
You can bet our lives on this,if I fired all union police, prison unions, and trial court unions at 8:00AM Monday and had the media broadcast that they will be replaced with all NON-UNION cops, prison, and court staff,I would have every position filled by 4:59PM Monday. If you were fired from your government job but could get it back as a non-union cop, wouldn’t you still take the job? Her’s another question,if you refused to take that non-union job,do you think the next man would refuse the position if they needed a job to support their family?

  • APPA DOUGIE

Why more troopers ? Alot of the ones now are useless considering they let speeding get out of control on on highways ! You ever notice the ” charade ” with a trooper pointing a radar gun at traffic but no one ahead to stop anyone. Over paid , UNDER ACHIEVED

  • Tyrone Tayla
