BOSTON (CBS) – The Celtics signed center Chris Johnson from the D-League to a 10-day contract to help out for now.

At 6’11”, Johnson gives the depleted Celtics some size while they wait for Shaquille O’Neal to return from injury, which could be sometime next week.

The Celtics traded away big men Semih Erden and Kendrick Perkins on an active Thursday, leaving the team without a healthy center for Thursday’s game against the Denver Nuggets.

With the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Developmental League, Johnson averaged 16.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks.

Johnson played two games with the Blazers on a 10-day contract earlier this season. He was previously a part of the Celtics during this past training camp.

He was expected to play Thursday night as the Celtics’ primary backup center.
