MBTA May Dump On-Time Guarantee Program

BOSTON (CBS) – The MBTA is thinking about getting rid of part of its customer bill of rights.

It's the program to give refunds to commuter rail passengers whose trips are delayed by more than 30 minutes.

General Manager Richard Davey told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Wednesday it's not a done deal - yet.

"It's a proposal we put on the table as we try to close our budget gap without raising fares or cutting service. As you know we have a $127 million budget gap in this coming fiscal year and we're trying to close that," Davey said.

WBZ-TV's Kate Merrill reports.

Davey said the MBTA is the only transit agency in the country that has this kind of refund program.

If they dump it, he said the MBTA would use the money saved to invest back into the system.

They're currently working on a program for countdown information in subways, which will cost about $1 million to implement.

Davey said eliminating the refunds would save them about that much.
