Lawrence Teen Mom, Basketball Player Scores 1,000th Point

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- Lawrence High School senior Ashleigh Greer has two loves in her life: basketball and her two-year-old daughter Trinity.

"I love it, and I never want to stop playing. And she's just amazing, a joy to be around," Greer said.

Greer got pregnant her sophomore year. "When everyone found out I was pregnant they were all so surprised. You're pregnant? You're a basketball star," Greer said.

Her grades slipped and for a year she had to give up the game she loved.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

"I began to cry and it just killed me, but after awhile I got over it and realized I do still have another year of school to get through."

Now she's a senior and back on the court. On Tuesday, she hit her 1,000th point.

"I just smiled, and once I heard the buzzer I knew I reached my goal," Greer said.

Greer admits reaching that goal has not been easy as a student-mother and athlete.

"It's hard to wake her up in the morning especially, but I manage my time. We both come to school together for the daycare services here. I leave at two and bring her home. Then I come back for practice," Greer said.

Greer has been playing basketball since she was four years old. Her dream is to play college ball, but she admits having a child at 16 has jeopardized that goal.

"My dream college was NC State, but I have not received any offers yet. So if I could get a college that helps me with daycare services would be good," Greer said.

Her coach says her star player has a lot to be proud of. "She's accomplished a big goal in her life, and I am proud of her." Coach Dan Blouin said.

And along with her record she's proud of the message she leaves behind.

"Live your life now as you can. Not to become older than you are because you only have one chance to be young and go to high school. I had to be a high school student and parent at the same time," Greer said.
