CHELSEA (CBS) — Firefighters were called to a large fire in Chelsea Tuesday morning.

The fire appears to have started in a multi-family home on Marlboro Street, and jumped to a second apartment building on Library Street. There are nine units between the two buildings.

The Red Cross says approximately 50 people lived in the buildings and have been displaced.

The gusty winds and sub-freezing temperatures complicated the situation, and firefighters told WBZ-TV’s Jim Smith everyone got out safely.

The fire is in a tightly compacted neighborhood with lots of cars parked on the streets with large snow banks, making it difficult for crews to get close.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Lana Jones reports.

The Red Cross set up a warming shelter at the Chelsea YMCA and is working with Chelsea officials to decide next steps.

“We are very familiar with the Chelsea YMCA,” said Mike Chaplain, American Red Cross Director of Emergency Response for Eastern Massachusetts. “It’s a large enough space and we can easily set up the services needed in a safe environment while not disrupting school.”
