Mattapan Clerk Shoots Would-Be Robber Armed With Hammer

By Beth Germano, WBZ-TV

MATTAPAN (CBS) – A would-be thief was shot and seriously injured when a store clerk opened fire at the suspect inside Essential Body Herbs on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan about 7:00 p.m.

The suspect, 47-year-old Robert Sims of Boston, was listed in serious condition at Boston Medical Center after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He is expected to survive and will be charged with armed robbery.

Police say the unidentified clerk was licensed to carry a firearm, and apparently not afraid to use it when Sims entered the store armed with a hammer.

Neighboring store clerks believe he was right to defend himself.

WBZ-TV’s Beth Germano reports.

“I’m glad he defended himself. People need to learn we work hard,” said Felix Rodriguez of Lili’s Market.

He believes storefront workers are too vulnerable to crimes like this.

“Imagine somebody attacked me behind the counter, what would I do?” he asked.

Boston police say the suspect was transported to the hospital, where his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police say they don’t know if the clerk was actually hit before firing.

Rudy Edwards, who knows the clerk in the neighborhood, says he’s someone who is always looking out for everybody else.

“He’s a cool guy, looks out for people around here. People go in and talk to him, he’s always a happy guy,” said Edwards

No charges are expected for the clerk.

We hear very few positive stories coming out of news regarding criminal activity against innocent shopkeepers except for this one. Men & women who work in stores have little protection against those who simply don’t care who they hurt so a story such as this makes me feel extremely happy.

Question….The headline for this article sounds like the clerk used a hammer to shoot a would be robber????????????????

Shame on the city of Boston for making it next to impossible for law abiding citizens to obtain firearms licenses. If you are unfamiliar with the process, do a little research in to what this shop keeper had to go through to carry legally. Then imagine him laying on the floor of his business after having been bludgeoned with a hammer over the few dollars he had in the register.

Ditto, ditto and ditto again! Almost all guns used by criminals are obtained illegally and said criminals don’t care about proper licensing. If guns were made illegal tomorrow the only people applauding would be the criminals. Do we need gun regulations, back round checks and licensing for gun owners? Of course we do. However, let’s make it a reasonable process to go thru rather than treating a person applying for a gun permit as the criminal.

what are you getting to may good for the clerk comments – I’ve tried to post to this twice now and neither comment has made the post – is this one vanilla enough?

Denise.. I may disagree with you violently but it really frosts me when WBZ decides that it is not going to allow me to hear what you have to say.
