Curious Whether The U.S. Is Socialist?

Will from Hubbardston Declared his Curiosity to WBZ-TV:

When I was in high school, I told the principal that the USSR and the US were trading places (1984).  The former USSR has turned, and we are almost at their former level.  With the healthcare program in Ma. and almost federally, aren't we a socialist country?  Isn't that a closer step to communism?  - Will, Hubbardston

Whoa.

Here's the definition of socialism from www.dictionary.com :

"a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole."

It seems to me the US is a long way from being socialist, though some people certainly think we're moving in that direction.

Some people criticized Social Security and Medicare way back when as been big steps toward socialism...and personally...I'm looking forward to having those available to me.

Your opinions?  And please be polite.
