Boston Hopefuls Vie For Ousted Chuck Turner's Seat
BOSTON (AP) - Candidates hoping to fill the seat left vacant by the conviction of former Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner on corruption charges are facing their first major hurdle.
A preliminary election scheduled for Tuesday will winnow the field of hopefuls to two, who fill face off in a final election March 15.
Seven candidates are running.
Among those hoping to replace Turner is Tito Jackson, a former campaign political director for Gov. Deval Patrick. Also running is Cornell Mills, the son of former state Sen. Dianna Wilkerson, who was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for accepting $23,000 in bribes.
Turner was convicted of taking a $1,000 bribe. He sought to delay the Tuesday vote, claiming that he was improperly removed by his fellow councilors.
