Maine AG: Gloucester Man Illegally Recycled

GLOUCESTER (CBS) - Maine's attorney general said a Gloucester lobsterman is facing serious charges for recycling cans and bottles in Maine.

Peter Prybot allegedly made thousands of dollars bringing recycled cans and bottles from Massachusetts to a redemption center in Maine for the last several years.

Bringing cans into Maine is illegal because the state pays 10 cents per can, as opposed to five cents in the Bay State.

It's an offense Maine's government there takes very seriously.

"Distributors, the foreign among you, bear the costs of $8 million worth of bottle bill fraud every year. That's a tremendous burden on local Maine business," said the attorney general.

Maine's attorney general said that cost is ultimately passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices.
