Mayor Menino Calls Boston Harbor Dumping 'Last Resort'

BOSTON (CBS) - Despite seeing more than 70 inches of snowfall so far this season, and very little melting, the city of Boston will continue to do what it does with it's plowed snow: dump it in designated vacant lots known as snow farms.

Mayor Tom Menino told Dan Rea on WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Nightside that there is no reason to dump it in the harbor.

"I'm not really a big fan of throwing it into the harbor because we spent millions and millions of dollars to clean up that harbor," Menino said. "A little bit here and little bit there and we'll get back to the old days when we couldn't swim in the harbor or couldn't fish in the harbor."

The mayor called dumping snow - which can contain oil, anti-freeze and other road contaminants - into the harbor a last resort.

"We're not in an emergency situation yet," Menino said. "So, if we have the space let's continue to create our snow farms."
