Winter Storm Cripples Travel On Commuter Rail
BOSTON (CBS) - As hard as it is getting around this winter, it's especially frustrating for passengers on the MBTA.
Wednesday was a rough day for rail travel. Just 27.3 percent of Commuter Rail trains were on time.
There were a lot of weather-related issues. In one case, a spokesperson said that more than 50 switches and gate crossings froze leading to long waits in the cold for commuters.
Most commuters understand snow and ice are enemies of travel. They say the bigger problem is that alerts come late, to the point of pointlessness.
WBZ-TV's Peg Rusconi reports.
"I'm here to catch the 9:52 train and I figured it would probably be a few minutes late, but I hadn't gotten an alert, and at 10 o'clock, the alert came saying (the 9:52 train) was going to be 45 minutes to an hour late," said Nicole McAdam, a commuter.
A spokesperson from the MBCR, which operates the Commuter Rail for the MBTA, said officials were working to fix the delay in alerts.
"I know for a fact that all the top level officials are focused on this particular issue," said Scott Farmalant, an MBCR spokesperson.
