Snow Blowers Selling Fast In Another Storm

WESTBORO (CBS) -- One item that was moving far faster than turnpike traffic Tuesday: snow blowers. Boston Lawn Mower in Westboro was one of the few retailers that had any left for sale.

"I looked quite a long on the internet, at all the local stores and this is the only place I could find that had any," said Greg Cusimano of Boylston as he toted home his brand new Ariens.

The owner of Boston Lawn Mower, Donny Satterfield, said he sold 700 Ariens snow throwers Wednesday, the busiest day in the history of the company which dates back to the 1930s. He expected to sell another 300 to 400 Tuesday.

WBZ-TV's Ron Sanders reports.

Much of his supply is being shipped in from Canada because there's less snow there. "We are going to run out in a few days, which is a wonderful thing. We've waited a long time for this," beamed Satterfield, whose said his father helped design the first Ariens snow thrower with Mando Ariens in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1949.

Satterfield, a snow thrower distributor for eight states, said he had two truckloads on the way Tuesday as well as a container on a ship at sea but most were spoken for. "I can't get one for my dentist, I can't get one for my cardiologist," said Satterfield, still smiling. He estimated he sold about 7,000 snow blowers in January, ten times more than in the same month last year.
