Coyote Stranded On Charles River Ice Escapes

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – A coyote was stranded on the ice in the Charles River for a few hours Tuesday morning as the snow began to fall.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Carl Stevens reports

It was stuck in an area near the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Edwin Land Boulevard in Cambridge.

“When animal control officers entered the water, the coyote jumped from his frozen perch into unfrozen water, swam a short distance, climbed back onto a frozen area and ran to land. The animal was last seen heading toward the Museum of Science area,”  State Police said in a statement.

Early Tuesday afternoon representatives from the Animal Rescue League found the coyote behind the Museum of Science and brought it in to warm it up.

Even the wildlife is having a difficult time with this harsh winter. Hopefully they relocate him safely.

    1. Sharon Wohlen says:

please help the poor thing!!! Don’t euthanize the poor baby!!! we are taking all their land can’t we be decent for once and actually help the animal instead of using some lame excuse to put it down!!!

      1. Sharon Wohlen says:

I can’t believe the people on channel 4 talking about this pitiful creature were laughing about it!!!! I’d like to see them fall in the river and sit outside for hours encased in ice!!! Would they laugh then!!!! I’m done watching channel 4 permanently!!!!!

      2. janet cirone says:

thank you Sharon, i agree with you, poor little guy, thank god he was rescued and brought to safety

  2. Jeff Kingston says:

Let’s hope we don’t get another one of those “Officers had to euthanize….” messages. Capture and take out to Quabbin Wilderness and release after some food to help it get through the next few days.

    1. janet cirone says:

i really wish someone would warm him up, feed him and send him off!

    2. Dave Francis says:

ummm, Jeff, you have to know that coyote would be dead within days if it were reintroduced at the Quabbin. It has spent it’s life near the city. If it were trapped and moved, two things would happen:

1.) Coyote would have no idea what to do to survive.
2.) Coyotes already there would kill it and eat it.

We need to quit wasting our resources “saving the animals” and paying animal control officers to jump into freezing water for a COYOTE. If it got stuck, it would have either unstuck itself or it would have died. The way nature intended it. I can think of 500 better uses for the resources wasted in trying to save one coyote.

Some folks need a serious grip on reality and not sugar coat everything.

      1. Dawn L says:

ummmm, Dave everything could use a helping hand now and then. I hope if I’m ever in need of a helping hand your not around. What gives you the right to say what animal control officers should do..

Sounds like you could use a good dose of something but I’m a lady so I won’t say what!

      2. janet cirone says:

thank you Dawn i agree with you

      3. STEVE says:

You know this coyote is going to be mowing on Fluffie or Fido later or even worse some little kid at a BBQ this summer. Shoot the animal and do something for the homeless guy in a cardboard box around the corner.

      4. Janet cirone says:

STEVE- SHOOT THE HOMELESS MAN AND YOU, HOW DOES THAT SOUND AND SAVE THE COYOTE- IDIOT

      5. Janet cirone says:

STEVE I WAS TOO HARSH, I AM JUST HAPPY THE COYOTE GOT SAVED AND THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT CARE ENOUGH ABOUT ANIMALS AND ARE NOT LIKE YOU

    3. jacqui says:

Uh Jeff, I live near the Quabbin and the last thing I need is another coyote here. Right now the deer are struggling to survive with the 3′ of snow cover and the coyotes are running them down. Our local turkey flock has been dessimated. The only way to save our wildlife is to stop taking over their habitat. This area can only handle so much before they all starve.

  3. Janet says:

I agree Jeff ~ I realize many people do not like Coyote’s however they do serve a purpose and hopefully he can be relocated safely.

  4. Michelle says:

Awe i know people do not like coyotes but still its an animal/wildlife and deserves to live..please save this pup..hurry its scary out there on the ice…little munchkin

  5. Natalia Szidon says:

    Hurry, hurry!

  6. Snow Sucks says:

    LOL
But no one like to see an animal suffer. More of these videos on weather.com

  7. brat says:

Maybe I’m oversimplifying this but couldn’t they toss a wood box onto the ice so the little guy could take cover in it until they figure out how to rescue it? Throw some food also.

  8. Jim C says:

Not a big Coyote fan, but I still don’t want anything bad to happen to it. Hi hope they can save it, tag it and let it go. Then monitor it. Don’t relocate it just yet. It may have pups. Plus we can learn alot from their urban habits.

  9. gramps says:

The Coyote lucked out…..It appears to be on the ‘Peoples Republic of Cambridge’ side of the river, those ‘tree hugging ‘Progressives’ will have him in a nice warm shelter & on food stamps by this afternoon…..

    1. emom says:

Tree huggers ,,, hahahahahah love it.

      1. kp says:

emoron, you’re laughing at “tree hugger”? Have you been living in a cave for the last 40 years?

    2. kp says:

Gramps, it makes me sleep better at night knowing people like you are a dying breed and will soon be gone.

PS: you should probably turn down medicaid and social security. Using either one would make you a hypocrite. Oops! Too late!

      1. janet cirone says:

just feel sorry for the guy, i do!

      2. gramps says:

  10. Dave says:

    Coyotes can swim.

  11. Chatico says:

Hope they can save this creature. I am not a fan of Coyotes, but he/she is trying to survive just like the rest of us. At least throw some food his way….

  12. Jeff says:

Sorry was leaving that comment for Wizard.

  13. Mr Common sence says:

This is NOT your neighbors dog! They don’t call it wild life for a reason. Obviously this is a weak or sickly animal and it’s out in this situation to die. Thats how nature works, how it controls it’s populations. Leave it alone! Besides state laws prohibit it from being relocated or feed! Maybe a better use of the time, effort and money to “save” this ANIMAL would be better used to help a homeless person out in this storm!!

    1. L says:

Any living being deserves help when needed… obviously a coyote shouldn’t be running around a big city. It’s out of its element and clearly could use some human help and compassion.

    2. janet cirone says:

thank you i am glad someone else cares about these poor starving animals, unbelievable you miserable cranky uncaring person! animals cant speak for themselves or defend themseleves, i really dont care about homeless people sorry, their own faults!!

      1. mtm60 says:

You are a very cruel thing. Of course you don’t care about homeless people, you only care if they get in your way. It’s not always their choice or their own faults. BTW animals can defend themselves, they’ve been doing it for centuries…your comments disgust me.

      2. janet cirone says:

boohoo! yes i only care about animals! they are homesless because why??

    3. sunny joan says:

This is Gods creature, not his fault we filled so much of his land with houses.
Unlike many homeless, this poor creature did not DRINK AND DRUG himself homeless.

      1. L says:

Well, hopefully the homeless are finding warmth and staying safe too…

I just finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It’s a novel about the author’s life growing up with intelligent parents who would rather their family (three kids) live destitute than turn commercial. I don’t want to give anything away incase someone is interested in reading it, but you’re led to believe that the parents had choices and chose to often times live without (food, electricity, heat and eventually be homeless). It is certainly a controversial read, and I can’t imagine that there are many homeless people out there with choices – as far as the mother is concerned it offers a different perspective than someone being homeless due to addiction; as for the kids, they certainly would have preferred having a more steady dose of creature comforts.

My heart goes out to anyone and anything that is having a tough time finding shelter and food – it’s going to be a rough couple of days.

      2. janet cirone says:

i agree sunny joan! someone called me cruel and i disgust them well usually homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics that is why they are homeless that is why i DONT feel sorry for them, ( unless lost their jobs with children then different story)

      3. LH says:

Don’t be so quick to judge people who are out on the streets. There are a lot of veterans out there who have come back from serving in our military. There are also many people who have lost their jobs because of the economy. You may think that they are all addicts and alcoholics, but the statistics do not have that as the majority. I hope you are never in need of compassion from others because you lack it yourself. It’s easy to blame and look the other way. I am glad there are people with hearts out there who do care. @ L – I also just finished The Glass Castle and it definitely introduces a new perspective on homelessness and transient families.

    4. Steve says:

      Coudn’t of said it better….

  14. WILEY E COYOTE, GENIUS says:

was he chasing the roadrunner? toss him some ACMA skates and a rocket to strap to his back, and he will be fine, beep beep

    1. janet cirone says:

      wow your’re a smart one!

  15. sunny joan says:

PLEASE pray for this animal that he will be rescued and warmed

    1. janet cirone says:

      good job joan!!!

    2. my3sons says:

Pray someone makes a fur coat from his pelt and puts him out of his misery.

      1. Janet cirone says:

WOW MY3SONS! YOU’RE A SMART ONE! AND AN IDIOT, HE IS NOT IN MISERY PEOPLE WHO CARE UNLIKE YOU SAVED HIM, FED HIM, WARMED HIM AND ARE HELPING HIM !!!!

  16. Wizard says:

    A wild animal, warmed?
    You’re a tree-hugger, aren’t you?

    1. janet cirone says:

      yep i guess so!

  17. ez says:

L — a big city is actually very much a coyote’s element. Coyotes thrive on urban sprawl as they are nocturnal scavengers who feed on garbage and small rodents. Some cities tag them and maintain a small population for the purpose of rodent control. Just an FYI.

    1. L says:

Huh – just did a quick search about coyotes and cities… didn’t realize that some prefer to live in the city. I still have a hard time picturing a coyote fairing well in a city – mixing with pedestrians and their pets… guess I’m too conventional (and prefer the suburbs myself). Well, hope the animal finds its way home safely – whether that’s in the city or not :o)

      1. sunny joan says:

In spite of the weather, news from Egypt, distress everywhere, there, are some really kind, compassionate, people, who have a heart for our wild animals, also suffering in the winter weather. It shows that we are still a great people .Dont have to be a tree hugger,or from rhe Peoples Republic,to love animals. Now excuse me while I feed the birds ,squirrels and hopefully a coyote.

  18. Cynic says:

Leave it alone…It probably doesn’t need or want our ‘Help”.

  19. Will K. says:

Did you mean VERMIN. You Moran….(that’s Irony for MORON)

    1. janet cirone says:

you are disgusting they are animals with children and are hungry yes they belong in the wild, i just wish they would return him there. maybe someone take one to you to a blank that is! i dont believe in shooting any animal!

    2. Ed Dracut says:

      Like I said WHACOS!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Ed Dracut says:

      Excuse the spelling WACOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Cynic says:

I thought it was Wackos… I could be wrong.

      2. kp says:

You’re wrong x’s 2, Ed. It’s WHACKOS or WACKOS. You had 2 chances to get it right and failed twice!

In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny, “What a Maroon!”

  20. Cynic says:

I wonder if Coyotes could be trained to Eat Canada Geese…….

  21. Chris says:

Ummmm…. so I understand your lack of compassion for a coyote, but honestly the ever increasing deer population has posed much more of a threat to the safety of humans than the coyotes have. Because we as humans have come in and taken over the coyotes natural habitats and made them more scarce we have actually increased the deer population ten fold in the last 10 years. So Mr. Ed from Dracut – get your facts right. Let the coyote go, have a deer for dinner, then that deer won’t jump out into my car or come down into my yard to eat my bushes. How many people do you know have had their pets eaten by coyotes? Now, count how many people you know who have hit a deer with their car. OK, now count how many people you know who have contracted Lyme Tick disease. How cute is bambi now?

  22. Janet cirone says:

UPDATE THE COYOTE IS SAFE WILL BE WARM AND FED IT IS AT THE TUFTS REHABILITATION CENTER YAHHHH PEOPLE CARE!!! THANK YOU ANIMAL CONTROL CENTER FOR NOT KILLING HIM AND HELPING HIM!!

    1. l says:

      Yay! – happy news!

  23. sunny joan says:

I HAVE JUST HEARD THAT THE LITTLE,WET COYOTE ,PLUS ANOTHER ONE HAVE BEEN FOUND AND ARE SAFE AND ARE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF.

REALLY NOW<, we invaded their turf, well the last I knew in the city which has been a city for many decades I dont remember seeing on of these there, And I lived in the city for over 20 years near the arboway…. YEah nope no coyotes… But in the suburbs near farms in open fields and woods, YEah they are seen,. HOWEVER

  25. emom says:

T Rex ,, yeah that would not work, Ed I agree with you, Its like having the skunks and racoons in a rural area we have issues with that all because of a golf course they expanded and well they had no where else to go but in our yards.. Oh but stupid people feel they need to FEED the darn things, will you not feed these WILD animals, they will only come back for more and then your pets will be their lunch or maybe a rabid one will be coming for you. Tree huggers,

  26. Patricia Calef says:

Janet Cirone: Sometimes people turn to alcohol and drugs due to terrible abuse that finally they can’t handle. Or they have lost so much in their lives like a child. Not everyone has a perfect life and everyone deals with it differently. Don’t judge unless you have been in their shoes.

    1. Janet cirone says:

i dont really know how we got this subject when we were talking about a poor animal caught in the water, but since you are going there, there is no excuse to do drugs or be an alcoholic, except be on disability and free everything…. that is what you get you know… i dont judge i speak from experience of family memebers ruining their lives and ours!!!! that is why i dont feel sorry for them, children yes, animals yes grown adults who CHOOSE to abuse their bodies NO! AND NO ONES LIFE IS PERFECT especially mine.

    2. Dawn L says:

wow Ed Dracut your a smart one huh? maybe instead of chatting about a story you could clearly care less about you might say…… get a hobby or better yet a job!

    3. Dawn L says:

I have two brothers that are druggies and drunks. They could work but they choose to keep the booze and drugs. Homeless all the time. I have more for pity
      this animal trying to survive!

  27. loveisgood says:

How anyone could look at that photo and see the misery that poor creature is in and then wish it harm is beyond me. Isn’t there enough hate in the world? Thank God for the kind and caring souls that are providing love, shelter and care to this animal and any person or animal in need.

    1. janet cirone says:

you can tell you are a christian! with a kind and decent heart

  28. Janet cirone says:

GOD BLESS THAT KIND HEARTED MAN WHO TRIED TO RESCUE THE COYOTE, I WISH MORE MEN WHERE LIKE HIM IN THIS WORLD. AND YES LOVEISGOOD, HOW CAN ANYONE LOOK AT THAT ANIMAL AND NOT FEEL SORRY FOR HIM??

  29. emom says:

Oh my GOD here we go again…. is it SUNDAY already.. gee’s give it a rest please…. he’s safe wonderfull , only to be let loose later and kill again.. sorry thats the nature of the beast,, I would love to see some try and rehabilitate a wild lion… no wait a bear, a moose , oh lets see a few rabid racoons… yeah there cute till someone gets bit or killed,,,, Its tuesday not the weekend,,,

  30. Lucy says:

I hope this time the coyote gets a deserved happy ending. They have a right to life. We must respect all life – do our best to. We must for our own sakes.

  31. janet cirone says:

when is last time you heard of a coyote eating a human being??

  32. Dawn L says:

By the way Ed I own a pitbull so I’m not worried about my dog getting attacked and
my “vicious” pitbull has more manners than you, and don’t call me a tree hugger you jack arse.

Hey Ed I LOVE ANIMALS MORE THAN PEOPLE nasty people like you always have something bad happen to them in time, and that goes for the rest of you heartless people!

    1. janet cirone says:

i love animals more than people too Dawn L for some reason these days!!

      1. Beezer says:

Hey, Janet. Why don’t you start drinking and drugging, so you can be homeless, live with the coyotes and really see what is like to 1) have an addiction that’s out of your control, and 2) see first had the many types of people, not just substance abusers, that are unfortunately homeless. Just be thatnkful your’e not an alcoholic and you have a roof over your head and most importantly be thankful that that this little guy was saved. That’s what this post was supposed to be all about until you heartlessly insulted and unfairly judged many people.

      2. Janet cirone says:

BREEZER—SORRY I AM NOT A LOOSER DRINKING AND DRUGGING MY LIFE AWAY, AND IF YOU DO SOME INVESTIGATING YOU WOULD SEE THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE HOMELESS ARE BECAUSE OF THOSE TWO ADDICTIONS!! I HAVE A ROOF OVER MY HEAD BECAUSE I DONT DO THOSE THINGS, GOD HAS BLESSED ME, ANSWERS MY PRAYERS TO HELP INNOCENT ANIMALS.

      3. gramps says:

PETA = People eating tasty animals…..

      4. Janet cirone says:

YOU ARE A DISGUSTING MAN!!!!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTS ME FOR YOU TO SAY THAT PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS,! YOU ARE A MISERABLE CRANKY, DISTURBING OLD MAN! ACTUALLY AN EXCUSE FOR A MAN!!

    2. sunny joan says:

Dawn l ,havent heard that word in many ,many , years. It came from up north in Canada I think.
.Good luck with your pittbull, ignore Ed and HIS bull .
The reason I dont count myself a tree hugger is, they usually love trees,[[fruits and vegetables]]and say the words with such reverence ,is they usually do not have the same love and respect for the unborn humans.I say usually, not all.
However, this is a new day and the little guy is warmed up [as the news paper article said]so there ..

  33. lisa says:

Many of the homeless are mentally ill and afraid to go into shelters. Please have compassion. Whatever the cause of homelessness, these folks are at an all time low and need help? Who is anyone to judge. Same for the little pup. remember “what so ever you do for the least of my brothers, you have done unto me..” Jesus did not qualify bt saying “just not the homeless that do drugs..I would advise peopel spend a day at shelter downtown or food pantry volunterrng to get the facts straight.

    1. janet cirone says:

i like what you stated Lisa, God does say to have compassion, trying to but difficult sometimes for people, i have more compassion these days for animals in need than humans, i guess i have just scene too many people ruin their lives with drinking and drugs and i didnt really think about the people who are truely sick mentally who deserve shelters. This whole topic was supposed to be about the poor coyote and ended up talking about people??? god bless you’re right i need to be more compassionate towards people too.

  34. sunny joan says:

No one is saying they want wild animals wandering the neighborhood, killing pets.
That is not the conversation here today. It is merely, wanting the poor little ,cold, wet, animal,to be brought to a safe place not to suffer.
.Thankfully, good people did just that and .thank you ,who ever you are,and safe travelling little guy.

  35. Cynic says:

It’s nice to know that God is on their side but most Coyotes don’t even go to Church.

  36. Bonnie says:

People keep talking about “wasting taxpayer’s money” sending the animal control officer out there. This was not an animal control officer. It was a rescue specialist from the Animal Rescue League of Boston, a non-profit organization, not a municipal officer. They are trained for this and many, many other types of pet/wildlife rescue. If you like their work please DONATE!!!

  37. Andrea Svens says:

Coyotes should not in a city they do not know how to defend there selfs with cars, buses, trains or trucks they end up being hit and run over. Many coyotes have killed cats and dogs. There are many coyotes in quincy in the marshes and President Gulf Course. There are sanctuaries for coyotes.

  38. Janet cirone says:

MY3SONS YOU ARE A MISERABLE PERSON, YOU AND GRAMPS SHOULD GET TOGETHER, I AM GLAD THE LITTLE GUY WAS CAPTURED, FED AND WARMED AND CARED FOR

  39. emom says:

Wild animals beleong in the wild, BUT because there habitat can not sustain them they have ventured into our lives and caused havic,,, Oh but we should feel sorry for an animal that is potentially dangerous Oh would you feel the same for a black bear in your yard ripping your dog apart or cornering a child ,,, I doubt it,, tranquiliz it if it should make you feel better either way it needs to go far away to harm no one and by the way I rather not have to see anyone get attacked by one of these, it wasnt so long ago a fox attacked a full grown man ,,,,, OH but they are so cute too.. rule of thumb NEVER EVER APPROACH A WILD ANIMAL OF ANY KIND , IT IS NEVER SAFE AND THE CHANCE OF HARM TO YOU IS GREATR, ,,,,, but feel sorry all you want till one attacks. then you will think different,

  40. sunny joan says:

Gramps, you are an agitator, probably a big teddy bear.Janet, you are falling for his line. Baby coyote sleeps warm and fed tonight..that is all that matters.

  41. sunny joan says:

Gramps, you are an agitator, and Janet is falling for it.You are probably a teddy bear at heart.Baby coyote is warm fed and in good hands, thats all that matters, right?

  42. Janet cirone says:

STEVE- YOU ARE AN IDIOT SHOOT THE HOMELESS GUY AND YOU AND LET THE COYOTE LIVE!

  43. Beezer says:

Janet- I, too, thankfully have a roof over my head and those of many animals, b/c I care deeply for ALL animals. I would fight to no end to help ANY animal, wild or domestic. I also unfortunately have an addiction which I didn’t chose. You should be thankful that you don’t. The coyote was saved this time so let it all go and stop being so defensive. Also, do some investigating yourself about homelessness and you’ll find that psychiatric issues are the base issue. Finally, lay off gramps and focus on the fact that this coyote was thankfully saved. Again, this is what this post was all about.

  44. hello blogger, i was reading your posts on Coyote Stranded On Charles River Ice Escapes CBS Boston and i genuinely liked them. 1 issue that i observed whilst browsing throughout your blog that some of the hyperlinks aren’t working and giving error. this makes the reading experience a little bit bad. you have a nice blog and i would request you to update the links so that interested folks can get all of the details they intend to have. By the way are you on twitter?? i would genuinely like to follow you and also get revisions in your blog.
