Kids Turn To Methuen Mayor On Facebook For School Closings

METHUEN (CBS) – When kids in Methuen want to know if school is going to be cancelled, they turn to the mayor.

More specifically, to his Facebook page.

Mayor William Manzi told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday that he received a "whole bunch" of messages from high school and grammar school students Wednesday night about the coming storm "asking that I strongly consider postponing school the next day."

He also had a few requests from kids to keep schools open, but Manzi said they were in the minority.

The problem is it's up to the school superintendent to cancel school. However, she's not on facebook.

School was eventually cancelled.

"I get a few laughs out of it (the facebook page) because some of the requests use colorful language," Manzi said

"We've managed to build a pretty good dialogue with them (the students) and I think it's a good thing that they're on the mayor's Facebook page."

Manzi also writes his own blog and can be reached via Twitter.
