BOSTON (CBS) - The mid-day weather models are in and here is the latest on the next snow storm.

We continue to believe that this will not be a blockbuster event.

There are signs at various layers of the atmosphere that this storm will not line up perfectly to give us a maximum snowfall.

Having said that, there is still a potential for 6 inches or more for parts of our area and a very messy morning on Thursday.

TIMELINE

Rain and snow should break out just after 7 p.m. Wednesday night and become steady and heavy by 10 p.m.

The rain snow line will set up in southeastern Massachusetts for the first half of this storm but will collapse southward overnight, turning the precipitation to all snow for all of southern New England.

The peak of the storm will be from about 10 p.m. though 6 a.m.

Snow should taper fairly quickly Thursday morning, shutting off between 8-to-10 a.m.

AMOUNTS

The heaviest snow area is still somewhat hard to pin down, but right now it still appears that 6-to-10 inches should fall from Boston south to about Plymouth.

South of Plymouth down to Cape Cod can expect 3-to-6 inches, while the outer Cape and Islands should prepare for 1-to-3.

3-to-6 inches will fall north and west of Boston and into southern New Hampshire.

There will be a sharp cutoff to the north where not much snow falls at all.

WINDS, TIDES

Winds will briefly be strong especially for southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod Thursday morning, gusting to 50 mph.

The one high tide to watch would be Thursday at 5 a.m., there could be minor coastal flooding at that time.

49.6 inches of snow has fallen in Boston so far this season. The normal amount for an entire winter season is 42.2.
