LAWRENCE (CBS) — The Lawrence Fire Department has received a $6.6 million federal grant that will allow the department to rehire the nearly two dozen firefighters it laid off last year.
The grant from the Department of Homeland Security will allow the city to rehire the 23 laid off firefighters, plus 15 additional firefighters.

Nothing against firefighters but didn’t the city of Lawrence just “borrow” $27(?) million to balance the budget? Mayor William Lantigua went on a spending spree with that windfall and the feds are GIVING him $6 million more? Am I the only one who sees something wrong here?

Spike is correct. Something is wrong here!! Using grant money for staffing purposes?? Where is the budget money going?? Why is Police, Fire, and Teachers the ones that are always under the knife?

I live in lawrence and hoping and assuming the money will be used for what its intended for. I really hope they reopen some of the closed fire houses.

Maybe if we could avoid putting the funds in Lantigua’s personal checking account then the firefighters, teachers and police may have a chance!
God Bless those men and women in uniform in Lawrence.
