Fake Valet Steals Car From Woman In Labor

LOWELL (CBS) - A thief pulled a scam at a hospital and stole a car from a woman in labor.

Sonia DeSousa of Tyngsboro was in labor when she pulled into the parking lot in front of the emergency room at Lowell General Hospital around 3 a.m. Friday.

She was walking into the hospital when a man met her and told her she couldn't park there and that her car would be towed. But, he said he was a valet for the hospital and would move it for her, so she gave him her keys and went inside.

WBZ-TV's Lisa Hughes reports.

As she checked in, a nurse told DeSousa there was no valet service at the hospital. Hospital security ran out and checked for the car, but it was gone.

"I've seen people being taken advantage of before, but this is probably one of the lowest ones I've seen in my 23 years," said Capt. Kelly Richardson of the Lowell Police Department.

Police were called and later found the vehicle in a different neighborhood.

The fake valet is described as a heavy-set white man with dark hair.

"She described that he had some kind of a uniformed shirt on. It said 'staff' on it, which led her to believe that he worked at the hospital. He doesn't work at the hospital," said Capt. Richardson.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to call police at (978) 937-3200.
