MANSFIELD (CBS/AP) — Two men were shot in Mansfield early Saturday morning. One of them was killed, the other injured.

Mansfield police and state police are investigating; they say it happened at an apartment complex on Francis Avenue around 3:40 a.m. The complex is known as the Village at Mansfield Depot.

WBZ News Radio 1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

Aderito Cardoso, 22, of Brockton was shot in the head and killed. The name of the man who was injured is not being released. Officials say he was shot in the torso and his injuries are not life-threatening.

A medical helicopter flew Cardoso to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston where he was pronounced dead.

WBZ-TV’s Alana Gomez reports.

A large group of family and friends gathered around Cardoso’s Brockton home Saturday afternoon.

“I miss him, I wish he was here, I wish he didn’t die,” said Cardoso’s 12-year old brother Adenilzo Lopes. “He did everything for me. He was always there for me.”

Cardoso had a seven-month old daughter with his girlfriend.

Cardoso’s family and close friends say they have no idea why he was at the apartment building in Mansfield.

“It’s just a shame that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said a friend Juary Goncalus. “I just wish he wasn’t there.”

Police Chief Arthur O’Neill told The Boston Globe they’d recovered a firearm and there’s no continued threat to the community.

Just an FYI – Section is not “affordable” or susidized housing – i.e. housing projects or state funded housing. Any apartment that is up to state code MUST accept section 8 IF the amount of the housing voucher covers the rent. If they adjusted their rent rates to the amount of the housing voucher THEN it would be considered affordable housing. I have no idea what kind of complex this is, but just so you know it would be illegal to tell a prospective resident that they cannot apply because they have a Section 8 voucher – per Massachusetts Fair Housing Laws. Before judging maybe you should do some research.

Section 8 is not affordable or state subsidized housing…..but the rents cover the state vouchers and it is illegal not to accept people who have state subsidized vouchers… lol
