Former Police Chief Cleared In Boy’s Uzi Death

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – A Massachusetts jury has acquitted a gun fair organizer of manslaughter in the 2008 death of an 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi submachine gun.

The Hampden Superior Court jury found former Pelham Police Chief Edward Fleury not guilty on Friday of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn. He was also cleared of three charges of furnishing machine guns to minors during the gun fair in Westfield.

WBZ-TV’s Kate Merrill reports.

Fleury cried and hugged his attorney and his family after the verdicts were read, while Christopher’s relatives walked quickly out of the courtroom without commenting.

Fleury said he regretted holding the machine gun shoot and will never do it again.

Prosecutor William Bennett said the jury had spoken and the trial was fair.

Any fool could see that chrages shouldn’t have been brought to begin with.

Any fool can see that an Uzi submachine gun should not be put in the hands os an 8 year old and I support gun rights and the NRA.

It’s ashamed the child died so young. Both sides want to blame the other and both sides should take some responsibility. The father should not have allowed his son to shoot the gun as he was too young to control it and the people responsible for the event should have had an age limit.

Maybe now the persons putting on the event will change their regulations, making parents sign an agreement to abide by the rules.

What is wrong with people today? Guns are not toys and they should not be put in the hands of children. There is truly a lack of respect when it comes to the dangers involved with guns and gun ownership. If you are going to own a gun you must treat the responsibility with the utmost respect. Minors should not be near weapons and certainly should not be allowed to fire them.

I;m glad he was found not guilty. To many people here to blame for this, not just Fleury.

This is when the citizens of the State of Massachusetts, file suit against the boy’s father 1) for wasting the courts time and 2) FOR PUTTING AN UZI IN HIS 8 YEAR OLD’s HANDS

You need permits to drive cars, fish, hunt but any idiot can become a parent
