Spinouts, Wrong-Way Drivers, Poor Visibility On Roads

BOSTON (CBS) – One word can describe driving in Massachusetts Wednesday – dangerous.

State police want you to stay off the roads if possible.

They're seeing several spinouts and cars off the roads, but no serious injuries have been reported.

Visibility was so bad on the Massachusetts Turnpike early this morning troopers found several people driving the wrong way. There were no accidents in those instances, despite the whiteout conditions.

"Snow is falling at a pace greater than plows' ability to keep up," state police said in a statement early Wednesday morning.

Here is their regional update as of 12:30 p.m.:

Northeastern Massachusetts: Another tractor-trailer unit has jack-knifed, this one at Route 495 south at Exit 32 in Westford. The TT is to the side of the road, and there are no road closures as a result. A heavy tow truck is en route. Meanwhile, the tractor-trailer stuck at Route 495 and Route 2 is still awaiting a heavy duty tow, and the left lane remains closed at that location. Situation on Route 28 north (downed tree) has been cleared. Overall, all barracks reporting heavy snow and light traffic. Barracks still responding to occasional spinouts.

Metropolitan Boston and Metrowest: Heavy snow with high accumulation throughout region, with multiple reports of downed tree limbs. Traffic is light. Troopers responding to numerous spinouts and skidding accidents. No road closures at this time.

Southeastern Massachusetts: Norwell Barracks has responded to one crash with minor injury, that in Hanover. Snow and moderate traffic in northernmost part of this region (Norwell, Hingham, Scituate etc.) with power outages and downed trees and power lines in parts of Bristol and Plymouth Counties. Middleboro Barracks reporting heavy snow again and light crashes. Remainder of the mainland region experiencing rain or rain-snow mix, with light to moderate traffic. Dartmouth Barracks reporting heavy snow with no crashes. Precipitation form of rain on the islands.

Central Massachusetts: Tractor-trailer unit remains stuck in snow on the ramp from Route 395 to Route 20 in Auburn. The snow has been cleared and the ramp has been opened to traffic. Overall, roadways remain snow-covered with no major crashes at this time.

Western Massachusetts: Route 141 still closed over mountain. Troopers responded to four minor crashes in last hour. Snow continues but major highways plowed down to pavement.

Massachusetts Turnpike: Troopers remain on scene of jack-knifed tractor trailer on ramp from Route 20 west to Route 84 east. No injuries, but minor fuel spill being cleaned. Estimated time for removal is 45 minutes. Overall, traffic remains light to moderate. Speed limit at 40 mph from NY State line to Boston. Restrictions remain in place on hazardous material transports and tandems.
