Tsongas, Tierney Want Constituents To Feel Safe
LAWRENCE (CBS) – The shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has raised questions about security surrounding members of Congress.
Two members of the Massachusetts delegation were asked about that during a meeting in Lawrence Monday.

For Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and Congressman John Tierney it was their first public event since the shooting.
"Absolutely shocked. Completely shocked," Tsongas said.
"I think we all know, those of us who hold public office, that there is always some element of risk, but to have that risk realized."

Tsongas has a bond with Giffords - both began serving in the House at the same time.
"Just Friday we were sitting next to each other at something called a steering and policy meeting. So this is just truly shocking for so many reasons."
Tierney said everyone will be more cautious, but access should not be limited.
"I don't think there's much else that we can and probably should be doing right now. We represent people. We're the closest ones to our constituents. It's our job to get and about and talk to people, listen to them."
"We're going to have to find a way for those who want to come, and those of us there - to feel comfortable and safe," Tsongas said.
