Lynn Homeowners Face Fines For Snow-Covered Sidewalks

LYNN (CBS) – Homeowners in Lynn have about 10 hours after a snowstorm to clear sidewalks in front of their home, but if they fail to do so, they could face some hefty fines.

A number of Lynn residents owe the city $300 because of snow-covered sidewalks.

Some seniors have argued that it is too hard to shovel a substantial amount snow, but they still faced fines in some cases.

Meanwhile, many homes that received multiple fines are either abandoned or for sale.

WBZ's Paul Burton reports:

According to the ordinance, residents have 10 hours after a snowstorm to clear their sidewalk. Every day a sidewalk is not shoveled, a new $50 fine is issued. The rules are different for businesses and large residential buildings, which have to remove snow within three hours.

More than 140 snow tickets were given out in the last snowstorm, totaling $22,000 in fines.
