Keller @ Large: Snooki 'Wrote' A 'Book'

BOSTON (CBS) - Move over, Norman Mailer.

There's a new giant looming over the literary landscape, and her name is Snooki.

Yes, Snooki, from Jersey Shore, has "written" a "novel" about a young woman looking for fun and love on the boardwalk along the Jersey shore.

Art imitating life? Dare we speculate?

Let's interrupt the sarcasm for a moment to make sure everyone is up to speed on this subject matter.

If you haven't heard of Snooki or "Jersey Shore," don't feel bad. Actually, you might feel proud once you get the gist of it.

Snooki is a 23-year-old woman who acts like an out-of-control 16-year-old, engaging in a range of risky behaviors.

She appears on an alleged reality show in which she and a group of other twenty-somethings party constantly. As she gives interviews in connection with her new book, which was actually written by someone else based on phone conversations with Snooki, it emerges that she "gets confused" by books with plots she doesn't already know, such as books based on popular movies.

I guess that rules out the classics, and maybe even the Bible.

Suffice to say that Snooki is a train wreck in the making who wound up in court a while back after creating a drunken disturbance on the beach, where the judge told her that "going through life rude, profane, obnoxious and self-indulgent is not the way you want to live."

I'm told by some fans of "Jersey Shore" that they see Snooki and her drunken buddies as negative role models, and do not seek to copy their behavior.

But I wonder if that's true across the board, especially with younger viewers who may think that if you're on TV, you're cool.

Anyway, Jersey Shore is one of the most popular shows on cable TV, so something is connecting somehow with someone. And that's kind of scary. Like the idea of a book written by someone who can barely read one.
