Medical Minute: Holiday Eating

BOSTON (CBS) - The holidays are a time when many of us over indulge when it comes to eating. The availability of so much delicious food is too tempting and you can say "no thank you" just so many times.

But you don't have to be a glutton. You can taste that yummy pie but a taste is not eating two or three slices.

The typical three choices for the holiday meal are: turkey, ham, and roast beef.

Some families traditionally eat one of the three. But which one is the most nutritious?

From a caloric point of view, turkey is the winner. It also has less fat, especially if you don't eat the skin.

There are more calories and fat in dark meat compared to white meat.

Roast beef is high in fat. Ham has a lot of sodium. And duck is not as nutritious as turkey.

Enough of my "bah humbug" attitude. Eat what you enjoy but just don't over do it.
