Police Superintendent William Evans told WBZ-TV it appears to be a tragic accident. Weather was not likely a factor because the street was clear.

It's not known if the woman was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash.

The bus driver was shaken up and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for treatment. Standard drug and alcohol tests will also be conducted.

The bus is operated by Paul Revere Transportation, which issued this statement  after the crash.

"Paul Revere Transportation is deeply saddened by the terrible tragedy that took place this morning. Our heartfelt prayers and sympathies go out to the family of the victim. Paul Revere is cooperating fully with the accident investigation."
