BURLINGTON (CBS) — $15,000 worth of toys were stolen Saturday from the Toys for Tots program.

UPDATE: Donation deadline extended until 6 p.m. Tuesday

State police say the toys were being stored in a POD container at a warehouse facility in Burlington from where they would be distributed to charities.

The program, coordinated by the United State Marine Corps with help from Massachusetts State Police, collects and distributes toys for needy families.

Police say about 1,500 toys were stolen from the locked POD between 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday. It appears the toys were sorted through and only toys valued between $15 and $30 and for children 8 and up were taken, police say.

WBZ-TV’s Paul Burton reports

They add a break-in of a second POD was attempted, but unsuccessful.

“This is not just a crime against the PODs company or the Massachusetts State Police or the United States Marine Corps or even the administrators of this wonderful program who have worked so hard to collect these toys,” said Colonel Marian J. McGovern, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. “More importantly, this is a despicable crime against the generous people who donated these toys and against the hundreds of children in need who would have received these gifts and who now will not. The State Police and the Burlington Police will do everything we can to find who did this and try to recover these toys.”

WBZ News Radio 1030’s Karen Twomey reports

The Toys for Tots collection ended last week, and organizers say new donations may not make it to families by Christmas. But they are still accepting replacement donations at any State Police Barracks. Checks can be made out to “Toys for Tots.”

State police are also asking anyone who has information about the theft or if they are suspicious of a sudden large quantity of toys to call either state police at 508-820-2121 or Burlington police at 781-270-1914.

Why did God make so many bad people? He must not like the rest of us too much.

      1. sumac says:

God didn’t make bad people. He created man with free will so it is up to each individual to make their own decisions, good or bad. And He loves everyone, despite their behavior.

      2. JM in San Diego CA says:

You’re wrong. The “free will” excuse is really lame. God DID make bad people, if you believe in creation. I learned the legends as a young Catholic boy. God is omniscient — it means “all-knowing — so anybody God creates is going to live a life that God already knows all about. If God lets it happen, anyway, God just has to say, “Oh, well!!”

With all the things going wrong with God’s creations, God must have to say “Oh, well!” very often. I am an atheist for many good reasons. You are a believer because of faith, alone.

I don’t mind people being religious, but don’t take time for talk about God’s love before you have a satisfactory explanation for God’s mistakes.

Well Shaq is the face for Toys for Tots at the Toys R Us website. What I’d love to see here is if Shaq and/or the Celtics stepped up and donated the money and/or toys to replace what was taken. That would be a wonderful way to fix this situation.

Put a GPS tracker inside a few toys in each storage location/container. They’ll try it again – BE READY FOR THEM.

  15. B. says:

Awful funny they’d interview Arthur Enos for this story, considering he pleaded guilty to Medicare billing fraud in which he bilked the taxpayers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Interviewing a thief about a theft? How ironic.

  16. mike says:

What do you expect from a state like Taxachusetts!!! Instead of the police sitting on the side of the road catching speeders they need to be patrolling neighborhoods protecting you and your property. And when are you going to quit giving to these charities? I would be better to find a family in need and help them personally….that’s what Jesus would do!!

  17. Ashley Bottoms says:

Normally I would feel bad for the Marines, but considering how they were rude to me and refused my donation offer of $200 because I am transgendered and the money would be coming from the transgendered community, I only feel sorry for those poor children who will now be doing without on Christmas…

A message to the Marines…when you treat others bad, don’t be surprised when bad things happen to you…negativity breeds negativity…

    1. JM in San Diego CA says:

You made that up, you weasel! They never turn down a usable donation, irrespective of the source.

but You are not Transgendered..You are a guy who dresses as a girl on Friday Nights…That’s all you are..a freak show

  18. Will says:

As a contributor to this program for years, I wonder why the security of these toys seems to have been so lax. Thieves would steal the gold out of their mothers’ teeth. Doesn’t make those who support this program very comfortable that their contributions are not protected any better than this.

    1. R H Politz says:

Will, please read my comment and don’t give up. Our Marines haven’t and neither have I.
Thank you and God bless you for helping to put a smile on a child’s face.

  19. Perseus317 says:

This is indeed a sad situation. However, it happens every year. There are plenty of dirtbags who don’t give a damn about Christmas or the children who have nothing. The politically correct crusade against Christianity only serves to exacerbate the situation. These days it is important that the storage site for the toys needs to be more secure. There should be some sort of alarm system, and video monitoring, so that the thieves can be caught. It is not too difficult for would be thieves to find the location of the stored toys. The level of security must be increased in the future.

  20. Andrea says:

I was at the site today. There are at least 12 pods out in the parking lot. All with small little locks on them. Not many toys in the building itself. However there are cameras on the side of the building, so maybe the police caught them on camera.

  21. NotObambler says:

Doesn’t this happen every year or two? Nobody’s ever caught. Sniff, sniff; scam.

    1. Ashley Bottoms says:

I wouldn’t be surprised myself if the Marines staged this themselves to get more people to make donations…seriously, it would not surprise me at all…I hope I am wrong, but you never know nowadays…

If someone should catch the culprits I hope they ‘help them down some stairs’ several times before calling police… It is only the right thing to do.

  25. Melissa Ramrattan says:

This is just sad! what a world we live in….

  26. R H Politz says:

As the IG and CFO for the Marines Golf Classic benefiting the Toys For Tots program in Southern Nevada, I have seen the extraordinary effort our Marines constantly put forth for needy children without regard to religion, race or any other of today’s classifications. This year was extremely difficult. A change of orders, troop deployments, people who would normally give now being forced to ask and sponsors who just cannot contribute what they did in the past has created a situation in which fewer Marines have to do twice the work for more deserving children. But, they are Marines and they made it happen.
To those who wonder why the toys were not “guarded” well enough, I can’t speak for the POD in Burlington but I can tell you that, in our district, there are just not enough Marines to go around. We have only 16 bodies to cover an area of 2.3 million people. Last year we had 80 and the year before, over 100. As with any program of this size, there will be incidents and mistakes but I can tell you from experience that this is one of the finest ways to put a smile on a needy child’s face and instill a bit of hope in their hearts. I will NOT give up. Nor will any of the Marines I work with.
And, to the perps, here’s a message. You have just insulted the largest group of the finest warriors this world has ever seen and you have taken from children we (and may others) are trying to help. We follow the law but we also look in every corner so, do yourselves (all of you) a favor and bring back the toys and turn yourselves in.
    Merry Christmas and Semper Fidelis

    Kwanza gifts for sure…

This thief had better pray to God that the Marines dont catch him. If you have ever served you would understand.
