SEEKONK (CBS) -- State Police say a young man is dead following a hit and run in Seekonk.

It happened on Route 195 Westbound near exit one around 11:25 p.m. Friday.

They say 18-year-old Jacob Mayo of Seekonk was walking in the breakdown lane on the highway, when he was struck by a passing car that left the scene. Mayo was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

State Police aren't sure why Mayo was walking on the road.

State Police released a statement at 3:45 p.m. Saturday saying that they had located the car involved in the incident, but no further information would be released.

Previously they said they were looking for a red 2000 to 2005 Hyundai Accent. They said it would have front end damage and a damaged windshield. It was also reportedly missing the right side view mirror.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

Mayo was an honors student who played baseball, football, and basketball in Seekonk.

Jack Whalen, Mayo's football coach, said he was a good kid to be around.

"A lot of fun, always had a smile on his face. Comes from a very, very good family. Just a tragedy," Whalen said.
