SEEKONK (CBS) — State Police say a young man is dead following a hit and run in Seekonk.

It happened on Route 195 Westbound near exit one around 11:25 p.m. Friday.

They say 18-year-old Jacob Mayo of Seekonk was walking in the breakdown lane on the highway, when he was struck by a passing car that left the scene. Mayo was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

WBZ News Radio’s Kendall Buhl talks with Seekonk Football Coach Jack Whalen about Jacob Mayo.

State Police aren’t sure why Mayo was walking on the road.

State Police released a statement at 3:45 p.m. Saturday saying that they had located the car involved in the incident, but no further information would be released.

Previously they said they were looking for a red 2000 to 2005 Hyundai Accent. They said it would have front end damage and a damaged windshield. It was also reportedly missing the right side view mirror.

WBZ-TV’s Paul Burton reports.

Mayo was an honors student who played baseball, football, and basketball in Seekonk.

Jack Whalen, Mayo’s football coach, said he was a good kid to be around.

“A lot of fun, always had a smile on his face. Comes from a very, very good family. Just a tragedy,” Whalen said.
