Water Main Break Soaks South End
BOSTON (CBS) - An icy mess was left behind in Boston's South End Thursday morning, after a major water main break flooded the streets and some basement apartments.
The overnight break left dozens of residents with no running water and no power – meaning no heat on a sub-freezing morning.
The 12-inch water main burst around 2:30 a.m. on Shawmut Ave. near West Springfield Street. Both of those streets were closed through the morning commute for repairs.

Several buildings were evacuated and power was shut off while inspectors made sure the basement water posed no danger.
The water main break left behind a skating rink on the streets and a foot-deep sinkhole, which swallowed the rear of an SUV.
"This happened to us three years ago," said Dan Moran, who lives in the residence directly in front of the sinkhole. "I still had the cellphone number to the repair crew and called them in the middle of the night."
Emergency crews speculated early Thursday morning that the temperature drop was behind the damage.
