Bundle Up! Very Cold Weather On Its Way

BOSTON (CBS) -- The calendar may not officially say it is winter, but we are in for some mid-winter cold over the next few days.

As if temperatures in the 30s and wind chill values in the teens were not bad enough, even colder air is plunging down from Canada and headed right for New England.

The next 36-48 hours will be the coldest stretch we have had since February 6-8th!

It all starts tonight. Temperatures will drop to their lowest values of the season. Boston will struggle to stick near 20 degrees and all of the suburbs will be in the teens.

In parts of Northern Worcester County and Southwest New Hampshire we will likely see our first single digits!

Tomorrow will then be the coldest day of the season. Skies will be mainly sunny, but this is what we call "ineffective sunshine" as temperatures will stay below freezing all day, in the 20s.

Follow that up with a night even colder than tonight with widespread single digits in the suburbs and I would say winter has unofficially arrived!

Friday also brings our first chance of widespread snow to Southern New England, but it will be very light and scattered, a dusting in spots Friday evening.

The good news is temperatures will return to near normal this weekend, back into the 40s!
