Police Chief On Trial In Child’s Uzi Death

SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – The former police chief in the western Massachusetts town of Pelham goes on trial Monday. Edward Fleury is charged with manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of an 8 year-old-boy at a gun fair two years ago.

Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Connecticut died after an Uzi he was firing at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club flipped backward and shot him in the head. Christopher’s father, who was standing nearby, gave him permission to shoot the weapon.

Fleury owned the company that co-sponsored the event. His lawyer says there’s no way his client could have anticipated the child would die.

Under Massachusetts law, children can fire a rifle or shotgun with parental permission, and under the supervision of a certified instructor. It is not legal for a child to fire a machine gun.
