Army Corps Searches For Munitions On Vineyard
EDGARTOWN (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is launching an extensive search for munitions on hundreds of acres of Martha's Vineyard once used as a military training ground.
The $5.2 million project starting Monday will examine public and private property and even search off shore.
The search was prompted by the discovery of several World War II-era mortars shells and two 100-pound bombs on the island in the past two years.
Carol Charette, project manager for the Corps, tells the Cape Cod Times surveyors with metal detecting devices will look for rounds left over from military training from 1941 to 1947.
She says some private property owners have not given permission for the Corps to search their land. The survey is expected to take more than a year.
