Hawk Trapped In Andrew Square T Station

BOSTON (CBS) -- Imagine being on the Red Line at Andrew Station and not being able to find the exit -- kind of like that old song about a guy named Charlie stuck on the MTA.

But this isn't a guy. This is a bird -- a red tailed hawk to be exact.

The young hawk has been trapped in the rafters at the station for a few days now.

The Animal Rescue League showed up because they were worried the bird of prey was getting thirsty.

Danielle Genter of the Animal Rescue League said she was trying to lure him down with water. "I'm trying to get him to come down. Running water works better. He'll come down for water."

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.

The hawk somehow got trapped in the above netting that the T installed to keep pigeons out of the rafters. Now they've got a raptor in the rafters.

Commuters are sympathetic. One said the bird must have family and doesn't need to be up there. Another expressed confidence that the hawk would get out, saying, "He's just scared right now and needs his space and some time."

The Animal Rescue League and transit police tried everything from throwing rocks at the hawk to scaring it. They even tried tossing bits of a hot dog, but the bird seemed unimpressed -- preferring to stay high above the fray.

By day's end, the hawk was still stuck at its Andrew Square perch.
