Squirrels Unplug Braintree Lighting Ceremony

BRAINTREE (CBS) -- Weather has been known to delay a holiday tree lighting from time to time. But this year's lighting ceremony in Braintree is delayed by something else in nature.

Squirrels.

The animals chewed through lights strung on trees near Braintree's Town Hall.

The lighting ceremony was supposed to be this weekend, but had to be rescheduled while the city waits for replacements to arrive. The ceremony has been rescheduled for Sunday, December 12.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan says the city has a plan to keep this from happening again.

"Last year we decided to put the lights up and keep them up throughout the years. Squirrels got the better of us. We'll be taking the lights down after Christmas."
