BOSTON (CBS) – Did the Red Sox make a run at free agent Yankee closer Mariano Rivera?
According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, they did and so did the Los Angeles Angels.
“#redsox tried to steal rivera with 3-year offer, im hearing. 2 more teams also offered 3. but rivera is close to $30-mil deal with #yankees”
“#angels also bid for rivera with 3-year deal, i’ve heard. and one more team. still working on it. #yankeesicon.”
Heyman says the Yankees are close to re-signing Rivera to “a two-year deal worth close to $30 million.”
According to ESPN Boston.com’s Gordon Edes, the Sox offered Rivera a two-year deal at $15 million per season.
Why would the Sox go after Rivera, if they already have Jonathan Papelbon?
“#redsox do not trust papelbon. first they shopped him, then, word is they went for rivera,” Heyman tweeted.
