I-Team: Man Accused Of Swindling Widow In Court

BOSTON (CBS) -- The car salesman who allegedly pitched plenty of illegal sales has nothing to say as he's led out of court in handcuffs and shackles.

Dan Wright's the President of the Sterling Motor Group in Danvers - a car salesman turned con man first exposed by the I-Team for allegedly preying on a woman who was recently widowed and stealing a top of the line Mercedes that her husband left to help support his family.

Stacey Chicoine's husband Joe died of brain cancer in August of 2009. That's when she brought Joe's Mercedes and the title to the car over to Dan Wright, who agreed to pay her $53,000 when the car sold, but months later he told her the car disappeared.

WBZ-TV's Kathy Curran reports.

Chicoine says Wright told her he had $10,000 for her and said "I don't have your keys, I don't have the title, it's gone!"

The I-Team discovered the car didn't just vanish, it was sold by Dan Wright and the title was forged back in May.

You can see Joe Chicoine's signature dated May 15 2010, signed eight months after he died. When asked if he forged a dead man's signature, Dan Wright replied "no I didn't."

According to court documents, Wright told police he did these illegal deals to pay off some long standing debt. He says when he started his business he was behind and in debt and never caught up.

Danvers Police Detective Sgt. William Carleton says they began receiving complaints from people in October and at one point they were trying to track down 15 different cars.

In one case, Wright stands accused of forging and selling a car he stole from another client this summer. Stacey Chicoine says "he's a sad soul, I feel bad for him, he's got to live with what he's done."

Charges haven't been filed in Chicoine's case, state police are still investigating.
