MAYNARD (CBS) — Underage drinking has ruined a long-standing Thanksgiving Day tradition.

The Maynard-Clinton High School football game this Thursday has been canceled after five Maynard football players were caught drinking.

According to Maynard Superintendent Dr. Mark Masterson, three of the students arrived drunk to the homecoming dance on Friday. The two other students were found by police drunk inside a Maynard home.

WBZ-TV’s Beth Germano reports.

The players have been suspended. That means Maynard does not have enough players to safely field a team. “Not only will these events interrupt a long tradition, but it will sour the high school spirit week activities leading up the Thanksgiving,” Masterson said.

Clinton High School Superintendent Terrance Ingano calls this “a real slap in the face to their team, and especially the seniors.”

“This was a big game for Clinton and the biggest home game of the year,” he said.

Ingano adds that the school was planning to honor several senior athletes at the game.

I get the whole underage drinking thing and how kids shoudlnt be doing this… i think canceling the game is not he right thing to do… drinking in highschool is nothing new the way its being dealt with has changed… you cannot prevent it why take away something these kids have worked four years to earn

Maynard only had 16 players the whole season?

Unfortunately a couple kids ruined it for all – although the Adults could have gotten together to see if there was a way to work around this sad situation before cancelling it for everyone. Maybe cut the # of players on the field for both teams?

  5. Luke says:

Maynard after the suspensions only had 12 kids including JV so they couldn’t field a safe team
