Maynard-Clinton Game Canceled After Players Caught Drinking

MAYNARD (CBS) -- Underage drinking has ruined a long-standing Thanksgiving Day tradition.

The Maynard-Clinton High School football game this Thursday has been canceled after five Maynard football players were caught drinking.

According to Maynard Superintendent Dr. Mark Masterson, three of the students arrived drunk to the homecoming dance on Friday. The two other students were found by police drunk inside a Maynard home.

WBZ-TV's Beth Germano reports.

The players have been suspended. That means Maynard does not have enough players to safely field a team. "Not only will these events interrupt a long tradition, but it will sour the high school spirit week activities leading up the Thanksgiving," Masterson said.

Clinton High School Superintendent Terrance Ingano calls this "a real slap in the face to their team, and especially the seniors."

"This was a big game for Clinton and the biggest home game of the year," he said.

Ingano adds that the school was planning to honor several senior athletes at the game.
