Fender Bender Ends In Road Rage Stabbing In Dorchester

DORCHESTER (CBS) - It started as a fender bender between two cars, and ended with a stabbing that landed one man in jail and another in the hospital.

This all took place Monday afternoon on Morrissey Boulevard near Freeport Street.

State police said two male drivers were exchanging papers after a fender bender, when a third man who was waiting in traffic became irate.

That 54-year-old Quincy man allegedly approached the accident scene and started attacking one of the drivers.  The driver, Colum Flaherty, a 62-year-old Quincy man, pulled out a knife and fought back, police said.

The unidentified 54-year-old was taken to Boston Medical Center with minor slash wounds.  Flaherty was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and police say more charges may follow.  State Police Lieutenant Brian Hermes called it the worst case of road rage he's ever seen.

The investigation closed two southbound lanes of Morrissey Boulevard right through rush hour.

Bill Shields of WBZ-TV contributed to this report.
