Dozens Of Headstones Toppled In Cape Cemetery

HYANNIS (CBS) - There's a vandalism mystery on the Cape.

Police are trying to figure out who's been desecrating dozens of graves at a historic cemetery in Hyannis.

Since Halloween, nearly 40 headstones in the Oak Grove Cemetery have been knocked over or smashed.

Some of them date back to the early 1800's.

Barnstable police have stepped up patrols and there is a neighborhood watch, but it hasn't stopped the vandals.

"This is one of the oldest cemeteries in town and lot of the names you see are individuals who have street names throughout Hyannis and Barnstable," Assistant Town Manager Tom Lynch told WBZ-TV.

"It's one we value for the history of the town and we are sorry this senseless act of vandalism has occurred."

This is not the first wave of vandalism at Oak Grove.

Police say dozens of grave sites have been desecrated during the last two years.
