Rhode Island Attraction "Waterfire" Is Going Overseas

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence's biggest tourist attraction is heading to Italy.

Waterfire, the city's popular public arts event, will close the International Architecture Biennale 2010 in Venice on Nov. 19 and 20.

Waterfire takes place several times a year in Providence, as fires are lit in the rivers that cut through the city's downtown. The event, which also features music, dancing and performances, draws tens of thousands to the city annually.

The group that runs Waterfire on Thursday says Waterfire Venezia will feature 33 bonfires in a canal outside the entrance to the Biennale's Arsenale exhibition halls.

Waterfire founder Barnaby Evans calls it an honor and says he has long dreamed of lighting Waterfire in the canals of Venice.
